"Liberalism and authoritarianism: notes on a troubled history"

Contemporary research and mainstream views on the ongoing authoritarian shift focus ​tremendously on the ‘white working class’, the ‘left behind’, the ambiguous concept of ‘populism’. Little attention, however, is given to liberalism’s own role in this shift. While ostensibly presented as a counter-force to the ongoing authoritarian shift, the actual relation between liberalism and authoritarianism is, historically and currently, much more complicated. In this talk, I will look into the historical trajectory of liberalism’s relation to authoritarianism and will draw out some conclusions and questions about the contemporary predicament.

"Quantitative Geopolitical Intelligence"
This workshop offers an introductory look at QGI, a tool designed to showcase how normal 1 dimensional indicators can reveal unseen international patterns. Participants will get hands-on experience in identifying patterns, and practice presenting their discoveries. It's an opportunity to gain insights into the fabric of international relations, and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application through the precision of data analysis.

QGI description:

At its core, QGI is an innovative platform designed to analyze and reveal significant patterns between countries, leveraging data across multiple dimensions including politics, economy, and military. This platform provides a structured approach to understanding the intricacies of international relations and patterns, supported by an extensive database spanning over three decades, over 200 countries/territories and over 50 indicators.
 

"Are women less corrupt than men? Exploring the research on gender and corruption"

Goals

The aim of the workshop is to introduce the participants to the complexity of solving conflicts by diving into a simulated peace conference. They will be introduced to key concepts such as security dilemma, power balance, self-enforcing treaty, territorial conflict.

Simulation

The master of the workshop will present a fabricated conflict scenario where a ceasefire has been reached between the two warring sides. A map will be provided. The participant will then be divided in 4-6 groups (according to the number of participants). Each group will represent the leadership of a different party interested in the conflict. In order to reach a peace deal, the participants will need to solve a series of issues presented by the master. Each country will have its own objectives. Each group will receive a document listing their goals, the perceived goals of the other parties, and the scenario their country needs to avoid.

After making themselves familiar with the scenario, the groups will engage in negotiations, trying to solve the differences between the parties. The groups will draft a peace treaty to end the conflict. At the end of the process, the participants will reflect on how successful they were in pursuing their goals and how much they think the peace could last.

"Ostrom Simulation"

"Have you ever wondered why it is so difficult to stop global warming?" The world's best experts and some of the most powerful politicians (and famous celebrities) have so far failed to stop climate change.

Yuki and Valentin Seidler, both from the Central European University in Vienna and former development experts with the International Red Cross, have developed a workshop, inspired by the influential work of Nobel Prize winner Elinor Ostrom, that will first introduce you to the main theoretical concepts behind the problem of tackling global warming and then let you experience them first hand in a simulation. No specific training or prior knowledge is required.

"Navigating Extremism: Exploring Political Polarization and Its Impact on Governance and EU Responses"

This panel discussion aims to delve into the complex aspects of political radicalization in Europe and its far-reaching consequences on global politics, policies, actions, and perspectives on major conflicts, including but not limited to the situation in Gaza and the Russian-Ukrainian war. The discussion will explore the roots, and consequences of political radicalization within European societies and the EU itself, examining its impact on foreign politics and international affairs. From examining the implications for the upcoming EU elections to discussing the influence of radicalization on policy-making, discussion should offer  insights from different angles.
